NEXT SUNDAY (May 15th) marks the arrival of the Carlow Food Hero Festival, the first festival to celebrate the very best that Carlow has to office when it comes to artisan produce. It’s a one day only affair and all takes places on the grounds of the four star Step House Hotel in Borris, Co. Carlow.
It’s a free event, open to all ages and puts a nice focus on Carlow food and food producers as the county’s tourism plan continues to develop. It also falls under Carlow Tourism’s Endless Sunday promotion, with free access to tourist attractions, gardens, free bowling, tea and coffee and demos all around the county. You can grab your free information pack here and your Sunday pass here (both PDF).
Kick off on the day is 2pm, running until 7pm. The list of producers making the day was released earlier today and includes
- The Goode Life Food company (who will roast a pig on a spit on the day)
- Carlow Brewing Company
- Carlow Foods
- Paddy’s Granola Cereal (a bag of which I have in the press and is great on its own as a quick snack)
- Malone’s Fruit Farm
- Mary Gittens Ballon Freerange Eggs
- Carlow Cheese
- Coolatin Cheddar
- Borris Country and Craft Market
- Glasrai and Goodies
- Coolanowle Organic Meats
- Hennessey Foods
- Chocolatte (recently opened here in Kilkenny. They’ll be providing Illy coffee on the day, a chocolate fountain with marshmallow dips and more)
and there will be more (producers) besides. Going beyond food producers, there will be a children’s cooking demo with Anne Neary of Ryeland House (3-4pm), a kitchen food demo with Step House chef Alan Foley (3.45pm – 4.45pm), a wine tasting and wine lecture from 4.45pm to 5.45pm with sommelier Alain Brah of Vanilla Grape and live music from Kate Powel.
Fingers crossed the weather returns to some kind of summer sun as picnics are highly encouraged on the day for families with a large range of Carlow produce available for sale on the day, with a large picnic planned for the grounds in front of Borris House Estate (across from the hotel).
Put Sunday May 15th in the diary as a family day out and go grab more details on StepHouseHotel.ie.
