THE DETAILS on this year’s Savour Kilkenny food festival are starting to emerge. The 5th annual food festival, celebrating all that Kilkenny has to offer when it comes to food, takes place across the October Bank Holiday weekend. Once again the majestic walls of Kilkenny Castle will form a spectacular backdrop for one of the biggest Food Festivals in Ireland, with lots of mouth-watering events in store. Earlier this month, local woman Marian Flannery was appointed as the new festival director for 2011.
According to organisers, this year’s programme is going to be very exciting. Following last year’s success the Parade Plaza in the centre of the city will again be turned into a tented food village with stalls where you can taste and buy the very best of food from Kilkenny producers, restaurants, hotels, cafes and chefs. The Festival will kick off on Friday October 28th with a Food Camp, with food bloggers, food lovers, chefs, restaurateurs, producers and representatives from the food industry in Ireland and abroad gathering to discuss various issues affecting the industry. The central theme of the Food Camp will be “Defining Irish Food”. I’ve been given a flavour of what to expect on this year’s Food Camp so far and it will be very tempting indeed. It’s an event I got involved in last year at the last minute, the result of which were the Food Camp Podcasts, available here.
As well as cookery demonstrations by celebrity chefs, tastings, and the return of the highly popular Masterchef, a new addition to this year’s festival programme will be a focus on healthy eating. To celebrate Year of Craft 2011 there will be a special event linking craft and food hosted by the Crafts Council of Ireland which is headquartered in Kilkenny. Surrounding towns and villages in the county won’t be left out either as food events this year extend into Thomastown and Castlecomer.
