TWICE in the past two weeks I’ve been told that it takes ’21 practices’ to break a habit.
For example, if you took sugar in your coffee and had three coffees a day, once you’ve passed a week without sugar in your coffee (having consumed 21 coffees), you’re on your way to breaking the habit.
When I started the whole January detox thing I knew it wouldn’t be completely cold turkey on everything. Granted over 21 days in I’ve yet to have a glass of wine, a beer, a packet of crisps, and kind of sugary sweets, large bars of chocolate, takeaway chips, a burger… the list goes on.
I have had a few Roses (I can actually count six in the month), and a mini Kit-Kat with a cup of tea, but that’s the height of it. After three weeks I’ve substituted reaching for the Pepsi in the fridge with reaching for a bottle of water. Instead of the crisps, I’ve been reaching for a yoghurt. Brown bread for white bread, sugar for no sugar. All in 21 days.
The last time I did this was back in fourth year in college, having read a book the looked at food habits (can’t recall the title just yet) but again, that book had suggested it would take 21 days – not necessarily 21 practices – to change a habit.
22 days into 2013, I think I’m nicely on track to make those habit changes permanent.
Anyone else doing something of a January detox and enjoying success?
