Falling In Love With Food, Again
Sitting in a coffee shop in another county, thinking about food in another country, I realise I’m falling in love with food, again.
Food, much with writing about food – be it food experiences, food events – is often taken for granted. You know it’s there in the background, you have a certain appreciation for it, a certain draw to it, but at the same time you realise you’ve not done something about it in quite a while.
Sometimes other things get in the way. Life throws up a few odd events. Work situations come, go, change. You’ve noticed you’ve stopped cooking. You realise the seasoning on the rack had gone beyond dry. You realise your writing had all but stopped and you can’t quite put your finger on why.
But then you clean out the presses in the kitchen, realising you’ve got a world of food gadgets coming out to play. You tidy the office and find recipes you had written, bookmarked, notepads chock full of ideas, stories, post planning and a whole load more.
Buried amongst the invoices, bank statements and printouts from work you find a copy of a food magazine you had stuffed into your bag and completely forgotten about.
Then, in that same coffee shop in a different county, where the mixed smell of pizza and coffee fills the air like it hasn’t done before, you realise you’re falling in love with food all over again and maybe it’s time to start doing something about it.
Update, October 2016: Fell in love alright, made some changes.
